Post 16 Curriculum
When students have completed year 11 there are a number of options. Some students choose to leave school and go to FE college. Those who choose to join the sixth form at Fosse Way School will have a personalised curriculum. This means that their programme, including the number of years they spend in the sixth form, is decided on an individual basis. Students with statements of special educational needs can stay at school until the end of the academic year in which they are 19 years old.
Fosse Way aims to offer a post 16 educational experience that prepares students for the next stage in their life whether it be starting work, following a course at FE college or moving into a “supported living in the community” placement.
The curriculum comprises three main elements;
Vocational/Subject Learning
Personal & Social Development Learning
Functional Skills (literacy, numeracy, ICT)
Each student follows a personalised programme constructed from the “menu” below;
- Towards Independence course can take up to 3 years to complete. It is a modular course that is accredited through ASDAN. Students follow a range of modules assessed on the level of independence achieved in variety of situations and using various skills. The range of modules offered has been enhanced by school-developed courses so that the overall package is broad and balanced, and it specifically includes work-related learning/vocational training and preparation for “work” and leisure.
- Certificate of Personal Effectiveness is a modular course (accredited by ASDAN) that usually takes one year to complete. It is suitable for students who have achieved a range of entry level qualifications and/or GCSE.
- Functional Skills Numeracy
- Functional Skills Literacy
- Extended work experience
- First Aid training
- Food Hygiene training
- Independence skills training such as travel
- Residential experiences: An opportunity to develop independence skills in a “residential training house” and also a residential leisure based experience that encompasses planning, making choices etc.
- Project SEARCH: an option for a final year at school with the aim of employment at the end of the year rather than going to college. We would suggest an option for year 12 or 13. Students are based at Royal United Hospital, Bath where they will follow an Employability classroom based course but spend the majority of each day on a work placement learning the skills needed for specific jobs. They will have at least 3 different 10 week work placements during the year.
